Packing Smarter in Order To Bring More When Travelling!
Not everyone agrees, “Less is more”. There are some of us who wants to bring as much with us as possible when we travel, so here are some tips compiled by the lean team to give us ideas on how we can pack smarter in order to bring as much or as little as we want but at the same time, not compromise on the “quality of life” on the road.

- Use your body as a clothes and accessories vessel. Wear your heaviest clothing such as jeans, running shoes, sweaters and jackets to save space…but not at all costs!
- For combi-weather trips, bring summer insides, winter outsides & practice layering!
- Organisers and packing cubes help keep things organised and from getting wrinkled, which seems to always happen once you start digging through your bag no matter how great you fold/roll your items
- Bring 3 of everyday wearable like underwear and socks. Why 3? Wear one, wash one, dry one!
- Plan your wardrobe so that everything matches with everything else. Pack only garments that can be color-coordinated with everything else in your travel wardrobe
- Do not think in outfits, consider pieces of clothing instead e.g. bring 3 tops and 3 bottoms and you get 9 outfits.
- Only pack enough clothes for maximum 7 days, no matter how long you’re travelling for – after a week, rinse and repeat
- Bring a little squirt bottle of wrinkle reducer spray or just water
- Bring enough clean underwear & socks to last you at least half of your journey’s time without doing laundry usually between 3 – 5 days. After that, you will have to do laundry anyway.
- When choosing your clothing for a trip take a look at each item’s fabric and consider the following factors: quality, thickness, weight, wrinkles, transparency, and texture.
- Comfortable for touring around, but can be dressed up for the evening
- Is appropriate for cool or warm weather through layering
- Doesn’t show stains
- Folds up small
- Coordinates well with almost everything else you’re bringing
- Consider replacing your jeans with “fake” jeans or lightweight trousers that take less space and dry quickly.
- Bring “double-up” clothes e.g. long trousers that zip-off at the knees to get shorts, skort for ladies, sarongs that can be used as skirts or towels, good walking sandals that acts as flip-flops
- Do not choose between 2 similar pieces of clothes e.g. shirts, shorts, dress, and trousers. Choose instead 1 “rugged” piece and 1 “dress” piece that will enable you to cover most occasions in this instance a button shirt paired with the “dress” shorts can get you dinner in a smart restaurant.
- Have basic attire e.g. t-shirt/tank top & trouser/skirt and use accessories to change the look
- If you are extremely organised, and have your activities laid out for the trip, pack for each day and/or leg of the trip using packing cubes i.e. sorting what you will be wearing each day/weather/activity
- Bring along older clothes that you don’t mind donating or leaving behind along the way.
- Place all your clothes into your bag vertically so it looks more like a filing cabinet if not using a see-through organizer cube
- Ball up your socks and underwear and stick them inside your shoes
- Double up a small make-up pouch as clutches or evening bags
