Tricks To Overcome Carry-On Cabin Travel Luggage Allowance
There’s a lot to be said for travelling light. No dragging a heavy case into the airport terminal, not having to worry if your luggage is going to go missing or hanging around at your destination watching those airport carousels go around and around for what feels like an eternity.
However, with airlines getting stingy on the amount of hand luggage assigned to each person and the rules on liquids, many people feel that they’re being forced to upgrade to checked luggage as they simply can’t fit enough into their hand luggage allocation.
But there are a few simple tips and tricks to help you make the most of that tiny hand luggage allowance, so read on to discover why you shouldn’t need to upgrade your baggage if you’re just heading off for the weekend.
Boosting Your Baggage
With most airlines, you're entitled to take two pieces of hand luggage with a total combined weight, so long as they fit with that particular company’s cabin baggage sizes. Each airline varies, with some offering 12kg weights and some giving as little as 8kg, but this is per person and not per family. Check our cabin luggage size guide to see what your airline’s requirements are.
It doesn't matter if you’re 5 or 105 years old, you're still entitled to the same amount of hand luggage, so even if you have to carry an extra small case around the airport for a while make sure that each adult and child makes good use of their hand luggage allowance.
Most airlines will not allow you to pool your hand luggage allowance across a party of people, so ensure that each bag is not over the limits where a weight limit applies. All limits given are for a standard economy fare.
