If your offspring is in their late teens or early twenties, then it’s only a matter of time until they’ll start planning a ‘mates only’ getaway abroad.
This is something of a rite of passage for many young adults, so who are we to stand in their way? Sadly, it doesn’t stop us worrying about them though.
Filled full of excitement and anticipation of the holiday to come, they might not be quite as organised when it comes to their packing as you’d like, and are probably more focused on their holiday outfits, so here’re some parent packing tips to help prepare your older kids for their first adult free holiday.
Do What’s Within Your Control
There is nothing you can do when they are away but you have some control before they leave. Hence prep work is key. How can you furnish them with the best circumstance while they are away? You will not be able to think of every scenario available but there are a few key areas to consider from a preventative and risk management point of view.

You may not have a problem dealing with these scenarios yourself but you do not want to be on the other end of the phone wanting to help but at the same time feeling helpless.

Tailored Mini First Aid Kit
This will probably be the last thing on their mind before they jet off for some fun in the sun, but little scrapes and sore heels can occur pretty much anywhere, so it’s best to be prepared. You can pick up a mini first aid kit from pretty much anywhere, but knowing what your offspring will be probably be getting up to on holiday, you can tailor this to be a bit more specific.
Painkillers, anti-diarrhoea pills, plasters (preferably blister plasters) for cuts to feet caused by impossibly high heels, antiseptic wipes and surgical tape are all essential items, so gather a few items together and pop them to one side. Consider things you may not use but they might need e.g. caffeine tablets for keeping awake, small bottle of multi-vitamins to help them bounce back from their hangovers, condoms for the obvious but also as emergency ice pack or water carriers.
Mobile Phone Back Up
Teenagers and young adults are ALWAYS losing things! And you can bet that something like the all-important mobile will be one of the first to go.
Taking selfies in clubs, days at the beach and trying out the latest extreme holiday activities are all situations where your son or daughter’s phone could go walkabout. Finding themselves without a way to communicate with the rest of the world feels like they’ve lost a limb, plus you won’t be able to contact them for the duration of the break unless they choose to contact you.
In these situations, it’s best to pack an old mobile phone and SIM card into their luggage should their phone go missing so at least they've got a back up communication device close to hand.
You’d be crazy to trust anyone with your credit card, but you might get a phone call mid-holiday asking for more money for a multitude of reasons.
In these cases, it’s probably a better idea to try and stash a few extra notes in the correct currency somewhere that your kid might not think to look, just in case. The inner pocket of a washbag and the back of an old spare mobile phone are good ideas, and you don't need to tell them that it's there unless you get a call pleading for more funds from the bank of mum and dad.
